As of 2016, the population of Stromboli was about 500 but the small volcanic island is in a constant state of activity.
For instance, the volcano erupted in 2019, killing one tourist and forcing others to seek shelter in the sea.
Fiona Carter, a British tourist who heard the eruption 17 miles (27km) away on the island of Panarea, said: “We turned around to see a mushroom cloud coming from Stromboli.
“Everyone was in shock. Then red hot lava started running down the mountain towards the little village.”
