What a car from 1900 tells us about modern motoring – and it’s not good

The first time this car was driven, Queen Victoria was on the throne, Britain was still fighting the Boer War, Winston Churchill was elected as an MP, and the playwright Oscar Wilde died.

In the 123 years since a lot has changed on the roads too in that there now are roads rather than dirt tracks filled with horse carriages.

The 1900 Daimler I drove on a cloudy Monday morning has survived for so long and is in such good shape today in large part thanks to the Royal Automobile Club who invited me to Epsom to drive a car older than many countries.
