The more one reads on this topic, the more peculiar it gets. There is not only a lack of consensus, but also no internal logical consistency within the various opinions. The 19th century tomb theory retains no credibility as to the initial reason for their being built; although such ancient Egyptian structures were later appropriated in some cases for this usage.
